Character: Refia
Series: Final Fantasy III
Version: DS version, shortly after finding the Earth Crystal.
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Straight, but she doesn’t really think about that stuff a lot.
Appearance: Refia is best described as “the girl next door” – pretty, but deceptively ordinary in appearance. She has shoulder-length red (almost strawberry blonde) hair and brown eyes, and she stands at around five feet, four inches. Refia’s somewhat no-nonsense demeanor is belied by the way she walks—with quick, confident strides. She tends to wear cute but serviceable clothing; a long-necked white tunic with long sleeves, pleated at the bottom with a short blue duster with functional pockets and held in place by a copper closure. On her legs she wears durable black tights, with leather thigh-high boots worn over them. The only accessories she wears are silvery earrings, which dangle in the shape of stylized points, almost like an arrowhead.
Personality: Refia is what one might describe as a mother hen—kind, but rather pushy. Although she doesn’t have a particularly strong sense of ordinary responsibility (such as training for a craft—and she’s even gone so far as to run away to escape it), she does have a strong sense of duty when it comes to the big picture, and she is fiercely loyal to her teammates or anyone else she cares about. And how does she show this? She lectures. Quite a bit, in fact, and although she always means well, it can be annoying. Be overly familiar with someone you’ve barely met? Get a lecture. Try and get out of a promise? Get a lecture. Joke about cheating on your significant other? Get a lecture and possibly a smack upside the head. Despite this, her friends know that she’s only trying to help and generally take her with good humor and a grain of salt. This includes, of course, her general dislike of frogs (especially as she had to transform into one a few times over the course of her journey), and although she may not like doing certain things, she’ll stick by them in the end if it’s something she can believe in.
Although Refia can, as previously mentioned, be flighty at times, shirking responsibility, she has the ability to learn and grow from her experiences—and eventually coming to accept the duties she once denied. As one of the Warriors of Light, Refia is incredibly pure of heart and strong willed. She is also quite loving, affectionate and brave, fighting until the end to protect her loved ones and the world. She is a true hero in every sense of the word—which is certainly one of the reasons she was chosen by the Crystals.
Abilities/Weaponry/Strengths: Refia, due to her upbringing as the daughter of a blacksmith, has a considerable amount of strength, agility and endurance. Although she has for the most part resisted her apprenticeship, she’s still picked up a few things, such as tempering metal and hammering basic weapons and horseshoes. During the course of her travels, Refia has poured her energies into learning the martial arts, largely focusing on weaponry (although when she uses her fists, it’s certainly nothing to sneeze at). Despite this, she is incredibly versatile, able to learn virtually anything she sets her mind to—partially thanks to the Crystals and her position as a Light Warrior. She has the ability to dual-wield most weapons as well as utilize shields and armor and use the basics of black (Blizzard, Fire and Sleep) and white magic (Cure, Poisona, which cures poison, and Sight, which allows her to receive a vision of the area around her, such as a city) among other things. Her current specializations, or job classes, are as follows:
Freelancer: The most basic of occupations, this is what Refia and her friends began as. She can cast basic black and white magic and use most non-class specific (such as spears, axes and certain types of mail or plate armor) weapons and armor. Since she learned more specialized professions, she’s largely abandoned this, although she can return to it at any time—and it’s likely that she’ll spend quite a bit of time as this in Paixao.
Warrior: In this form, Refia is unable to use magic of any kind, being that her focus is oriented towards the art of physical fighting. She can use most weapons and armor (excluding spears and hammers), as well as use shields, and can sacrifice her own defense in order to strike her enemies harder. Refia has chosen to largely walk the path of the Knight since learning how to do so, although like the Freelancer class, she can return to this by recalling her abilities, also known as “switching jobs”.
Knight: While using this, Refia can cover her allies in a near instant, able to take damage in their stead if they’re in critical condition. She is able to brace herself against attacks, thereby taking less damage than she usually would, even while using other classes. Refia also has the ability to cast basic White Magic (as previously mentioned, Cure, Poisona, and Sight).
Summoner: Although this was mostly taken as an afterthought, Refia still has the ability to use summoning powers, having gathered the spirits to her through purchase or battle. Although she’s not nearly as physically strong or fast while using this, she is much more magically resilient, able to tap into her inner potential in order to summon ancient and powerful spirits and direct their energies towards her enemies. The summons Refia possesses are as follows:
• Level 1: A Chocobo that unleashes a series of strong kicks on a random opponent..
• Level 2: Shiva, an ice spirit who uses “Diamond Dust,” an ice-based attack that freezes all enemies before shattering and further injuring them.
• Level 3: Ramuh, a thunder god who hurls “Judgment Bolt,” at foes, causing extensive lightning damage.
• Level 4: Ifrit, a fire demon who causes an “Inferno” and deals fire that consumes all enemies.
• Level 5: Titan, who pummels opponents with “Earthen Fury.”
• Level 6: Odin, the knight who attacks with the deadly “Zantetsuken”, which can instantly knock out enemies.
• Level 7: Leviathan, a water dragon who strikes enemies with “Tidal Wave”.
• Level 8: Bahamut, the king of dragons who attacks enemies with the powerful and non-elemental “Mega Flare”.
Weaknesses: Refia is largely unskilled in most magic, having spent most of her time as a fighter. Despite recently choosing to broaden her horizons with the Summoner class, she’s as yet unskilled in it, and she takes longer to summon than someone who has studied more extensively with it—something which leaves her vulnerable to attack, especially when she’s fighting alone. Should she wish to learn more magic, she will not only have to study it, but she will, by changing her class, fall victim to “crystal sickness,” which leaves her weaker than normal and disoriented. This takes awhile to get rid of, although Refia can do so by practicing her new skills or fighting enemies. The crystal sickness does not apply should she switch from a newer class to one she is more familiar (and therefore more skilled) with.
While taking the form of the Warrior class, Refia is unable to use magic at all, and her Advance attack leaves her much more vulnerable to counter-attacks. Although she can stand more physical damage than the Summoner and other mage classes can, she is far more suspect to falling to magical damage and can not so easily recover from it. This weakness also applies to the Knight and other fighter classes.
As a Knight, Refia moves rather slowly (perhaps due to the armor that she often wears in that form) and cannot attack as quickly as she can as a Warrior. She can also only cast the most basic of White Magic spells.
Refia is rather impulsive and flighty, which can get her into trouble—for although her luck (and lack of a sense of responsibility) saved her from the Djinn’s curse which struck her hometown, it can just as easily get her into trouble. Although she’s matured over her travels, having had time to do some thinking as well as growing up, much of her childishness remains.
Upon her arrival in Paixao, Refia is jolted back into the Freelancer class, which means she suffers from crystal sickness as well as losing all her weapons and armor along the way.
History: Who Refia’s biological parents are or where she truly originates from is unknown, but several years ago, when she was very small, she was traveling on an airship with them—along with the other future Warriors of Light. However, that airship, run by Cid, ran into a strange dark cloud. The airship crashed, killing all onboard but Cid and the four children and sending them plummeting to the Floating Continent, where Refia was found by Takka, the blacksmith of Kazus.
Although he didn’t know who the girl was or where she had come from, Takka raised the child as his own. He proved to be a loving but strict parent—something which clashed with the young Refia, who was naturally rebellious from an early age, and she often ran away to escape her responsibilities. As she loved the man who had raised her (and didn’t really mean to run away for good), she would always return and resume her training—although this obedience never lasted for long. On one of her escapades, Refia fled to Cid’s airship, hidden in the nearby desert, with the intent to escape on it, at least for awhile. Unfortunately for her plan, however, she was discovered by Luneth and Arc, who told her of the situation—that everyone in Kazus had been turned into phantoms by an evil djinn who wished to prevent the citizens from using mythril rings—forged by Takka—to seal him away. Wanting to help her hometown and stop the djinn, Refia decided to go with the group, prompting a playful remark from Luneth about her luck regarding slacking off. “Hey!” Refia fumed, her hands clenched into fists. “That’s not funny!”
The group journeyed to Castle Sasune in an attempt to find a mythril ring. Instead, they found Ingus, a royal guard who decided to help them and joined their quest. Now four, they left for the Sealed Cave where the djinn lurked—where they met with Princess Sarah, who possessed the ring they needed and accompanied them as far as defeating the djinn and restoring the people of Castle Sasune (who had also been hit by the curse) and Kazus.
The heroes largely continued in this vein, occasionally being joined by people who wished to aid them (often while following their own paths) and gathering the power of the Crystals. One such person who joined them was a man named Desch, who appeared to sacrifice himself to stabilize the Tower of Owen and save the Floating Continent. The Light Warriors had joked and bantered with Desch during their travels, and although Refia had scolded Desch on occasion, she was horrified by his apparent death, hoping against hope that he’d come back safely.
Another such person the group, who had grown to be close friends (despite the occasional argument) fell in with was a priestess named Aria. After saving her from succumbing to her injuries, she guided them to the Crystal of Water—only to shove Luneth out of the way of a fatal attack by one of the minions of darkness and lay dying while the four heroes fought and defeated the creature. With her last breath, the priestess begged them to save the world from the balance the darkness had drastically upset. Heartbroken, the young Warriors of Light continued, but it wasn’t until they were forced to cause the deaths of two great mages who had aided them, Doga and Unei, that they were able to truly comprehend the situation that had befallen them, and it was with a heavy heart that they eventually made their way into the Maze of the Ancients. It was there that, at last, they were blessed with the Earth Crystal’s power.
The group returned to their airship, The Invincible, to rest after a long, hard day, when Refia awoke in a place that was entirely unexpected…
